Extraction Post-Op Instructions
Day of procedure:
Bleeding:
-
Keep gauze in place. Maintain constant, firm pressure for 30-60 minutes
after procedure or as directed.
-
If bleeding persists or reoccurs, replace gauze for another 30-60 minutes.
-
Repeat the gauze applications as necessary until bleeding is controlled.
-
Some mild bleeding is expected & may continue for 24 hours after surgery.
-
Until bleeding is controlled, avoid rinsing, spitting, straws, or exertion.
Medications:
-
Take your prescribed medication(s) as directed.
Other:
-
Apply ice packs in 15 minutes intervals to outside of face for up to 36
hours after procedure.
-
Avoid smoking for at least 48 hours - smoking significantly delays healing.
-
Keep head elevated above heart and get plenty of fluids and rest.
For the following days:
-
After 36 hours apply moist warm packs to outside of face for 20 minute
intervals if swelling or jaw stiffness has occurred.
- It is normal for swelling to peak 2-3 days after surgery.
-
Bruising may occur and will gradually disappear over a week or two.
-
For one week, after each meal/snack & before bed, rinse your mouth with
warm water with enough salt added so that the water tastes barely salty.
-
Brush your teeth normally; but avoid extraction sites.
-
Eat food that can be eaten with comfort. Soft foods that are high in protein
(cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs) are especially beneficial.
-
Drink plenty of water.
-
Resume a normal diet as soon as it is tolerated.
-
Stitches placed should dissolve in 3-7 days.
