Extraction Post-Op Instructions

Day of procedure:

Bleeding:

  1. Keep gauze in place. Maintain constant, firm pressure for 30-60 minutes after procedure or as directed.
  2. If bleeding persists or reoccurs, replace gauze for another 30-60 minutes.
  3. Repeat the gauze applications as necessary until bleeding is controlled.
  4. Some mild bleeding is expected & may continue for 24 hours after surgery.
  5. Until bleeding is controlled, avoid rinsing, spitting, straws, or exertion.

Medications:

  1. Take your prescribed medication(s) as directed.

Other:

  1. Apply ice packs in 15 minutes intervals to outside of face for up to 36 hours after procedure.
  2. Avoid smoking for at least 48 hours - smoking significantly delays healing.
  3. Keep head elevated above heart and get plenty of fluids and rest.

For the following days:

  1. After 36 hours apply moist warm packs to outside of face for 20 minute intervals if swelling or jaw stiffness has occurred.
    1. It is normal for swelling to peak 2-3 days after surgery.
  2. Bruising may occur and will gradually disappear over a week or two.
  3. For one week, after each meal/snack & before bed, rinse your mouth with warm water with enough salt added so that the water tastes barely salty.
  4. Brush your teeth normally; but avoid extraction sites.
  5. Eat food that can be eaten with comfort. Soft foods that are high in protein (cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs) are especially beneficial.
  6. Drink plenty of water.
  7. Resume a normal diet as soon as it is tolerated.
  8. Stitches placed should dissolve in 3-7 days.
